More about Roger S. Gottlieb: Keynote speaker Prof. Roger S. Gottlieb will address the question of “Why it is incumbent on religious people and religious communities to respond to the challenge of climate change?”
Our keynote speaker, professor of philosophy at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, is internationally recognized as a leader on the political, ethical, and religious dimensions of our multifaceted environmental crisis, including the potentially catastrophic problem of climate change. Author of many books on these subjects, his recent efforts include: Engaging Voices:Tales of Morality and Meaning in an Age of Global Warming, The Oxford Handbook of Religion and Ecology, and A Greener Faith, Religious Environmentalism and Our Planet’s Future, about which Dr. Bob Edgar, General Secretary, National Council of Churches USA, writes “{his} stories of faith-based environmentalism provide a bright picture of the faith community's capacity for caring for God's creation. If we actively follow his lead, we will go a long way toward being more effective stewards of our fragile planet." His work, A Spirituality of Resistance: Finding a Peaceful Heart and Protecting the Earth, which was called by Protestant theologian John Cobb "a true spiritual guide for our day," and praised by Elie Wiesel, and his groundbreaking, This Sacred Earth: Religion, Nature, Environment, 2nd Edition, is the standard college textbook for courses linking religion and environmentalism.
A dynamic and engaging lecturer, Prof. Gottlieb’s rationality and ideas will challenge some traditional interpretations of sacred texts, yet remain motivating to the many theologians, clergy and laypersons at the annual Rhode Island interfaith conference on global warming.
